Welcome to the Scarborough Methodist Circuit,
Situated on the beautiful North Yorkshire Coast, overlooking the North sea, the Wolds and the North Yorkshire Moors, there is variety here. So too in the churches of the circuit, but everywhere the welcome is warm and in the name of Jesus Christ.
There has been a Methodist Society in Scarborough since 1757, four years after John Wesley's first visit. Wesley visited eleven times, travelling by horse "over the huge mountains to Scarborough". Our Christian heritage is much older and more varied than merely Methodism. Some of the circuit lies within the boundaries of land previously owned by Whitby Abbey, St Hilda formed a cell at Hackness. Rievaulx, Lastingham and Whitby all lie close at hand.
Whilst an awareness of the tradition is awe inspiring and gives a sense of connectedness to the past, we shall never stand still. Ecumenical partnerships are developing, new forms of worship and Church are being explored and the world wide web suggests a further sort of connectedness.
Through this website, may we be aware of that connectedness, and if you wish to explore further, then we look forward one day to meeting you rather more than virtually,
Peace and Blessings Mark P Haynes Circuit Superintendent.
